The Nachi Fire Festival takes place each year at Kumano Nachi Taisha in Wakayama, as the deities are returned to the base of Nachi Falls. Twelve fan-shaped portable shrines, representing the waterfall, are carried in procession alongside large torches. Fire moves through the site, set against the falls, in a ritual that has been passed down over generations.
