In Kawada, Sabae City, Toshi Yamada has spent over 60 years passing down traditional recipes to local women. Through times of scarcity before and after the war, and into today’s age of abundance, she has continued to believe in the strength of home cooking. Her handwritten recipes now number in the thousands. At 94, her life is reflected through the act of cooking—what it means to live, and to grow old.
